Giant seawall for Jakarta: collaborate to protect Java’s future

The ambitious plans for a giant seawall to protect Jakarta and the northern coast of Java from devastating floods are gaining momentum once again. Since 2008, both nations have worked together to develop the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) masterplan, a blueprint for safeguarding one of the world’s most vulnerable coastlines.

With the election of Indonesia’s new President Prabowo, there seems like new political momentum to realise this project. The Dutch Government has once again been invited to support the Indonesian Government in revisiting the NCICD plans, this time with an expanded focus on the broader northern coast of Java. Currently, Dutch water experts are collaborating closely with Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs (Kemenko) to develop a concept paper that will inform political decision-making for President Prabowo’s administration. Now that the concept paper is taking shape, this is an opportune moment to inform the Dutch water sector and gather valuable input.

On Friday 30 August, we invite all interested parties within the Dutch water sector to join an online seminar focused on the Pantura Java Integrated Coastal Development (PJICD) project. This event will offer an in-depth update on the current progress, anticipated next steps, and an opportunity for participants to contribute their insights to this critical project.
