Deltacountry Mozambique

Mozambique is one of the seven delta countries that are part of the delta country approach of the Partners for Water programme 2022 – 2027

This approach promotes sustainable and integrated water management through long-term partnerships and leverages experiences and results from previous Partner for Water programmes. Discover our partnership with Mozambique and how you can participate below.

What we do in Mozambique

Partners for Water uses its network, knowledge and financing to work on water security challenges in partner countries. This is accomplished through applying the expertise in sustainable, integrated, inclusive and innovative water management from the Dutch- and local water sectors in early planning phases

In Mozambique, we concentrate on the port city of Beira. The city is extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise and flooding and to enhance its resilience, Partners for Water has collaborated closely with the local municipality for over more than a decade. Together, alongside the water sector, we have worked on a strategic plan for sustainable development: Masterplan 2035. The plan aims at advancing water management and economic prosperity, building resilient residential area’s and strengthening the municipal organisation.

How we work in Mozambique

Masterplan 2035
Together with the local municipality and water sector, Partners for Water is working on a climate resilient city. Key components of this initiative include drainage, sewage and wastewater treatment, coastal protection, solid waste management, and capacity building within the municipal government.

Donor coordination
Beira has received funding from various organisations, like the World Bank, African Development Bank and the Dutch Water Authorities,  for numerous water projects. Partners for Water is engaged in the operation and maintenance of these funded projects, with the aim to prepare Beira to manage and sustain these projects independently.

Municipal cadastre
Partners for Water supports the municipality in improving the registration of land rights and increasing municipal revenue through the integration of land and property data with the taxation system.

Establishment and operation of SDUB
Partners for Water has facilitated the creation of the SDUB (Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Urbano da Beira), a public-private entity under the full ownership of the Municipality of Beira. The SDUB plays an important role in Beira’s urban development and addresses both urban social and flooding-related challenges.

Development of Maraza
Partners for Water supports the development of Maraza: a project that is realizing 25.000 houses that are climate-resilient and affordable for Beira’s middle-income citizens.
