Deltacountry Egypt

Egypt is one of the seven delta countries that are part of the delta country approach of the Partners for Water programme 2022 – 2027

This approach promotes sustainable and integrated water management through long-term partnerships and leverages experiences and results from previous Partner for Water programmes. Discover our partnership with Egypt and how you can participate below.

What we do in Egypt

Partners for Water uses its network, knowledge and financing to work on water security challenges in partner countries. This is accomplished by applying the expertise in sustainable, integrated, inclusive and innovative water management from the Dutch- and local water sectors in early planning phases. In Egypt’s Nile Delta, we are committed to enhancing integrated coastal management, promoting smart water use in agriculture and improving water supply and sanitation.

In Egypt’s Nile Delta, we are committed to enhancing integrated coastal management, promoting smart water use in agriculture and improving water supply and sanitation. Additionally, we collaborate with local stakeholders to upscale water management solutions. Our bilateral water cooperation is supervised by a High-Level Water Panel, consisting of various members from the Dutch and Egyptian governments, and is chaired by the water ministers of the two countries. The Panel meets once a year to discuss water-policy directions and the progress of the programme and project levels.

How we work in Egypt

Integrated coastal management
As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was renewed for five years in 2020, Partners for Water and the Government of Egypt collaborate to enhance integrated coastal management in Egypt. We do so by concentrating on building the capacity of local stakeholders when creating pathways that integrate Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into coastal zones. In this process, we make significant efforts to aid local knowledge on coastal issues and challenges.

Water and agriculture
Partners for Water collaborates with the Egyptian Government to enhance water management and water and climate adaptation in relation to agriculture in Egypt’s Nile delta. We support the development of sustainable water-use solutions in agriculture to help safeguard Egypt’s groundwater reserves and mitigate the salinization of coastal soils.

Water supply and sanitair
Partners for Water and the Government of Egypt collaborate to enhance water supply and sanitair in Egypt.  Key areas of our cooperation include modernising Egypt’s wastewater treatment plants to enhance the reuse of treated effluent and to reduce the CO2-equivalent emissions from the plants. Additionally, we support the upscaling of sustainable and circular sanitation solutions to peri-urban and rural areas in Egypt. Water supply and sanitair
