India is one of the seven delta countries that are part of the delta country approach of the Partners for Water programme 2022 – 2027
This approach promotes sustainable and integrated water management through long-term partnerships and leverages experiences and results from previous Partner for Water programmes. Discover our partnership with India and how you can participate below.
What we do in India
Partners for Water uses its network, knowledge and financing to work on water security challenges in partner countries. This is accomplished by applying the expertise in sustainable, integrated, inclusive and innovative water management from the Dutch- and local water sectors in early planning phases. Since the inception of the Partners for Water programme 2022 – 2027, India has been integrated into the Partners for Water Delta Countries initiative.
Our collaboration with India specifically focuses on the states of Kerala and West Bengal, as well as the National Mission Clean Ganga in Delhi. The Indo-Dutch water cooperation is demand-driven, with an emphasis on water security, availability and quality. The goal of our cooperation is to ensure that a programmatic approach is implemented through an integrated, participatory and inclusive methodology.
How we work in India
National Mission Clean Ganga (NMCG)
Our water cooperation with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is centred on knowledge exchange, conducted both online and in-person across India and the Netherlands. It facilitates dialogue from expert to expert as well as within and between cooperative teams. In the coming years, we will focus on key programme areas: sustainable water quality management, urban water management, monitoring and decision-making at the basin level, living and valuing of water and working towards resilient water systems.
Kerala
The water cooperation with the Government of Kerala is centred on water security, within the ‘Living with water and minimising risks in a changing climate’ framework. Water security addresses issues such as flooding from high sea levels, heavy rainfall, and river flash floods. Our support concentrates on integrated water resources management, integrated coastal zone management and water governance.
West Bengal
Our water cooperation with the Government of West Bengal focuses on water security within the framework of ‘Living with water and minimising risks in a changing climate’, specifically within the lower delta of the Sundarbans. Our main goal is to provide support on short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to enhance water security in the region. Doing so, we work closely alongside the Government of West Bengal. From April 2024 until the end of 2025, Partners for Water will offer technical assistance to improve flood resilience in the reclaimed areas of the Sundarbans.
