“Beyond the Risks: Strategic Choices for Climate Resilient Societies in ASEAN Countries”
Climate change has significant consequences for people’s livelihoods and safety, as well as for biodiversity, nature and the economy. The impacts of climate change are already clearly visible in Southeast Asia and will only intensify in the near future. Despite progress on global climate adaptation policy and increased financing for climate adaptation, climate adaptation is currently still fragmented, small-scale and insufficient or inadequate. The planning vehicle at national level are the National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), which all countries were asked to submit to the secretariat of the UNFCCC in 2025. The outcomes of COP30, particularly the Belém indicator framework (these indicators measure vulnerability reduction, system resilience, and safety, covering sectors like water, food, health, infrastructure, and ecosystems), while not yet fully refined, represent a step forward in measuring adaptation progress. Internationally, there is an increasing desire to show progress towards actual implementation of these plans. International, and particularly regional, exchange of experiences with the translation of global policies into national, regional and local action can help countries make progress and report on this.
This ASEAN cross-learning event aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Increase understanding on how to strengthen the enabling factors for the transition from planning to implementation of national adaptation priorities.
- Share good practices and lessons on developing projects and programmes in a timely, coordinated and efficient manner to address national adaptation priorities.
- Highlight gaps and needs for ongoing support for the transition from planning to implementation in the NAP process.
